Conferences

This week is conferences!  This is one of my favorite weeks since I get to share all of the wonderful learning that has been happening in our classroom!  If you have not returned your confirmation slip yet, I will be emailing you this week to confirm your day and time.  Please keep in mind that these are goal setting and progress monitoring conferences so no report cards will be distributed at this point in the year.  If you are unable to attend your conference, please let me know by email or phone.  Thanks!

This Wednesday is a full day of school.  This Thursday and Friday are half days of school.  The students will be dismissed at 12:30pm.  There will be no lunch served on either of these days.  Please remember to have your child wear athletic shoes on Monday and Wednesday for Kinetics.  There will be no library this week due to the half day.

Review Week

This week, we will be reviewing the last 5 weeks learning in reading.  As you probably noticed, the homework for this week was only a Family Times booklet.  Please complete at least one activity like normal and return it by Friday.  There will also be no spelling this week.  Math will still be coming home nightly as usual except for on days when we do not fully complete the lesson, and the students require more time for their learning.

This Wednesday is an early release day.  The students will be dismissed at 1:50pm.  Please remember to have your student wear athletic shoes on Monday and Thursday for Kinetics.  Library books should be returned on Thursday and are due back Friday.

Tardiness

As we continue into the school year, please make sure that your child is to school on time everyday.  When students are tardy, their day often begins in an unsuccessful way.  Sometimes this is due to missing breakfast or the feeling as though they have missed something.  Please keep in mind that our school monitors tardiness just like we monitor absences.

If you have not returned your student's green conference sheet, please do so as soon as possible. I will be creating a conference schedule this Wednesday.

This Wednesday is a full day of school.  I will be absent on Friday since I will be attending a wedding out of town.  Please remember to have your child wear athletic shoes on Wednesday for Kinetics.  Library books should be returned on Thursday and are due back Friday.

Homework Clarification

I wanted to take a moment to clarify any confusion that may exist around homework since this year the process is different from last year.  You probably have noticed that math homework is coming home almost everyday depending on whether the students need more time with a lesson or if the lesson was completed.  Math homework is always due the following day.  I have the students staple their math homework to the lesson pages so that you can see examples of the lesson.  The students are only required to complete the front and back of the first page which is labeled the homework page.  Please do not feel as though you need to complete any of the lesson pages.  I often choose specific problems for the students complete.  We very seldom complete all four pages as I feel that this is too much to complete in one class period.  On some days, your child may come home with only one or two problems complete.  This may be due to the fact that they spent more time with me in small group so that I could ensure that they understood the lesson.  Reading/Spelling homework comes home on Friday and should be returned the following Friday.  If you have any additional questions regarding homework, please do not hesitate to contact me by phone or email.

This Wednesday is an early dismissal day.  The students are dismissed at 1:50pm.  Please remember to have your student wear athletic shoes on Monday and Wednesday for Kinetics.  Library books should be returned on Thursday and are due back Friday.

Math

This past week your child learned how to use his or her Think Central website to complete tasks that help him or her to practice his or her math that we are learning in class.  Students can also practice their math at home.   I will be assigning "personal math trainers" for each lesson that we complete.  Students will have time to work on their personal math trainer in class but may want to finish at home.  Students in second grade who complete their personal math trainer on a daily basis are more likely to do better on their chapter tests since many of the questions that are presented on the chapter tests appear in the personal math trainers.  Your student has been practicing his or her login and password so he or she should be able to login at home.  I will be providing additional information regarding how to check your child's scores in math on the Think Central website during conferences.

I will be sending home a note regarding conferences this week.  Please fill this out as soon as possible and return it to school.  If you are unable to meet on the days that are listed, please let me know, and I will schedule a conference with you on a different day.  I want to make sure that I am able to meet with every family.

This Wednesday is a full day of school.  Please remember to have your child wear athletic shoes on Wednesday for Kinetics.  Library books should be returned on Thursday and are due back Friday.

Reading

Please make sure that your student is reading five books/chapters a week and adding them to his or her reading logs.  If your child still struggles with reading, please feel free to read with your child.  Reading should last for about 20 minutes.  Reading at home is so important in second grade as we push forward with improving our fluency and our comprehension.  Asking your child questions about what he or she is reading is also beneficial.  This helps him or her to understand that reading is more about understanding what we read and less about simply reading words.

This Wednesday is a full day of school.  There is no school on Friday, August 18th or Monday, August 21st.  Please remember to have your child wear athletic shoes on Monday and Wednesday for Kinetics.

Homework

What a great week!  The students did so well with relearning expectations this week that I am confident that we can now begin to dive into the curriculum.  This past Friday your child received their first homework assignments.  Homework is going to be slightly different this year.  Math homework will come home daily unless we are completing an assessment.  You can find your child's math homework in the clear pocket located near the front of  his or her binder.  This homework should be returned the following day.  The daily math lesson that accompanies the math homework will be stapled to it for your reference of what we were working on in math that day.  Your child also received a spelling/literacy packet on Friday.  This packet contains a list of the spelling words for the following week along with activities to do to practice the words, a reading log, and a Family Times activity sheet.  This packet should be returned the following Friday.  To ensure completion, the reading log must contain five books/chapters that your child read, and at least one family times activity complete.  If you have any questions regarding homework, please feel free to contact me at any time.

This Wednesday is an early release day.  The students will be dismissed at 1:50.  Students should wear athletic shoes on Monday and Wednesday for Kinetics.  Please check the snack calendar for your designated snack day.  Let's have another great week!
